Ioannis (John) Stathopoulos, MD, MSc was born in Athens in 1977. He is qualified from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1996 – 2003). He took a Master of Science (MSc) in Metabolic Bone Disorders (2008 – 2010) and is a PhD student in Metabolic Bone Disorders. He has Hellenic National Board Certification in Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (2015) after written and oral exams.

He has been trained in the Third Orthopaedic Department of University of Athens, KAT General Hospital, Athens, Greece (2011 – 2015), the Hand and Upper Limb Department of KAT General Hospital, Athens, Greece (2013), the Second Orthopaedic Department of “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital, Athens, Greece  (2007 – 2008), the General Surgical Department of “Paidon Pentelis” Children’s Hospital, Athens, Greece (2006 – 2007) and General Hospital of Kalamata, Kalamata, Greece (2005).

At present, he is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in the Emergency Department of Athens Medical Center and a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Κλινική Μεγάλων Αρθρώσεων of Athens Medical Center since 2015. His private office is located in Ilioupoli, Athens since 2016.

He is a member of the Hellenic Association of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (HAOST), the Hellenic Foundation of Osteoporosis (HELIOS), the Hellenic Society for the Study of Bone Metabolism (HSSBM), the Hellenic Society for Biomaterials (HSB) and Medical Association of Athens.

He participated in one multicenter, randomized, controlled clinical trials, and one multicenter observational study.

He is the author of 24 publications in peer-reviewed international journals in PubMed with 403 citations (h – index 12, i10 – index 14), 13 publications in Greek journals and a reviewer for four peer-reviewed international orthopaedic journals. He has authored three book chapters in Greek medical books.

He has given 19 lectures and had 45 oral and poster presentations in Greek and international congresses in the field of Orthopaedics and Bone Metabolic Diseases. He has attended several congresses, seminars and courses.

He has a special interest in joint reconstruction, especially in complex primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty cases, hip disorders in adults, sports injuries, metabolic disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and orthopaedic trauma.
